INTRODUCTION

ATEX Directive1999/92/EC, which is now transposed into Irish legislation Part 8 of the 2007 Safety Health & Welfare at Work (General Applications) Regulations is concerned with the risks from fire and explosion arising from flammable substances stored or used in the workplace.

The regulations apply to workplaces where flammable substances are stored or used for example where flammable liquids or flammable dusts are present.

The regulations apply to all work equipment and protective systems which are made available at the work place and must comply with these regulations and ATEX product regulations 2014/34/EU, which is now transposed into Irish legislation S.I. No 230 of 2017, equipment & protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres regulations 2017.  For nearly 30 years the CompEx Scheme has been the recognised global competency scheme for the safety of workers in the oil, gas and chemical industries. As the design and operation of plants handling flammable materials and the specification, installation, inspection and maintenance and repair of explosion protected equipment, are specialised activities requiring a higher level of competence than similar activities on normal industrial plants, CompEX provide a suite of training courses, depending on the level of competence required.

The course specifies the basic requirements for those working in ‘Explosive Atmospheres’ which when undertaken and satisfactorily completed, will demonstrate a measurable level of competence.

This course is part of the international scheme for the training and certification of core competence of personnel who work on equipment for use in explosive atmospheres. Such training provides companies with a target for their employees, which is recognised by the self-regulated sector of this industry as a necessary component of their Personnel Competency.

Participants will learn by active participation during the program through the use of exercises, syndicate and group discussion, training videos

A variety of self-evaluation tests and Team interaction exercises will be present throughout the course which utilise case studies and sample documentation. Delegates are assessed throughout the course by progress through the Lessons.
